According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as reported by Fundera, approximately 20 percent of small businesses fail within the first year. By the end of the second year, 30 percent of businesses will have failed. By the end of the fifth year, about half will have failed. And by the end of the decade, only 30 percent of businesses will remain — a 70 percent failure rate.

For the construction industry, about 75% of businesses survive their first year, 65% make it through their second year, and about 35% make it through their fifth year.

Less Than 5 Years

As we seem to be creeping towards a recession, these types of questions are going to matter more and more. In the small business sector, where most roofing and construction companies lie, the majority will be out of business within 5 year.

At TXP we’ve done hundreds of repairs on leaky roofs because the homeowner couldn’t get a hold of their “fly by night” contractors. The warranty that they were promised was nothing but a sheet of paper, and they were left holding the bill.

When storm season comes back around, and North Texas gets hit with its annual hail storms bringing out all the silver tongued door knockers, just take a second and ask them how long they’ve been in business for? What happens if you’re not in business and I need to use my warranty.
